Trajectory of Anglophone Studies at the Sorbonne.
Trajectoire des études anglophones à la Sorbonne.
Résumé
In this chapter, the author undertakes to retrace the trajectory of Anglophone studies at the Sorbonne, a trajectory that underlies the construction of this field of study, around its favorite objects: literature, translation, phonetics and phonology, linguistics, British and American civilization, in short, what constitutes "Anglistics" before 1970. The term itself may seem anachronistic if one sticks to those years. Indeed, borrowed from German and used by some, including Jean-Jacques Lecercle, the term did not appear in a French publication until 2001, thanks to Michel Bandry, to designate three fields: linguistics, literature, and civilization, to which a fourth should be added, the one proposed by Alain Cazade a year earlier, “specialty English”.
First of all, it is a question of identifying the role played by the Sorbonne or University of Paris in the constitution and evolution of Anglistics from the last decades of the 19th century until the end of the 1960s, and then to ask how this role is articulated with that played by other universities, or even by the École normale supérieure. We will then look more closely at the different fields that make up Anglistics, their emergence and their legitimization. Finally, an overview is given of the concrete organization of the teaching of English at the Sorbonne, in terms of places and forms.
Dans ce chapitre, l'auteure entreprend de retracer la trajectoire des études anglophones en Sorbonne, trajectoire qui sous-tend la construction de ce champ d’études, autour de ses objets de prédilection : littérature, traduction, phonétique et phonologie, linguistique, civilisation britannique et américaine, en somme, ce qui constitue l’« anglistique » avant 1970. Ce terme lui-même peut paraître anachronique si l’on s’en tient à ces années-là. En effet, emprunté à l’allemand et utilisé par certains dont Jean-Jacques Lecercle, le terme n’apparaît dans une publication française qu’en 2001, grâce à Michel Bandry , pour désigner trois champs : linguistique, littérature, civilisation, auxquels il convient d’ajouter un quatrième, celui proposé par Alain Cazade un an plus tôt, « l’anglais de spécialité ».
Tout d’abord, il s'agit de cerner le rôle joué par la Sorbonne ou Université de Paris dans la constitution et l’évolution de l’anglistique depuis les dernières décennies du XIXè siècle jusqu'à la fin des années 1960, puis de se demander comment ce rôle s’articule avec celui joué par d’autres universités, ou encore par l’École normale supérieure. Il convient ensuite de s’interroger plus précisément sur les différents domaines qui constituent l'anglistique, sur leur émergence et leur légitimation. Enfin, un aperçu est donné sur l’organisation concrète de l’enseignement de l’anglais en Sorbonne, en termes de lieux et de formes.
