This work proposes to retrace the way by which the artists approached, in books, the work of Arthur Rimbaud. This study establishes the catalogue raisonné of illustrated books and artist’s books, from the beginning of the 20th century, when the first illustrations appeared, until today. By choosing
to focus on the Illuminations, it examines the progressive constitution of a visual culture around Rimbaud and questions the relationship of illustrations to this poetry of the visual.
The thesis tries to bring the production of these illustrated books into the Rimbaldian reception as well as to highlight the role they play in the artists’ path. To show the evolution of the reflection on the articulation of the relations between text and image, implemented in and by the
illustrated book, starts a reflection on the way this illustration is favored by the open images of Rimbaud’s poetry, particularly in the Illuminations. Rimbaud, who configures his poetic image by investing a plastic image held in high esteem, spares there multiple potentialities and fertile principles for the artists. Informed of the textual devices of the poems, their illustrations develop in mirror. The passage of the illustrated book to artist’s book accompanies the growing concern of these creators to
be interested in the specificity of the poetry, and in the expressive originality offered by the setting in tension of the characteristics of the book to the service of the poetic effects.
Ce travail propose de retracer la voie par laquelle les artistes ont abordé, dans les livres, l’oeuvre d’Arthur Rimbaud. Cette étude établit le catalogue raisonné des livres illustrés et livres d’artiste, depuis le début du XXe siècle, au moment de l’apparition des premières illustrations, jusqu’aujourd’hui. En choisissant dans l’analyse de se concentrer sur le recueil des Illuminations, elle examine la constitution progressive d’une culture visuelle autour de Rimbaud et interroge le rapport des illustrations à cette poésie du visuel.
La thèse s’attache autant à faire entrer la production de ces livres illustrés dans la réception rimbaldienne qu’à mettre en lumière le rôle qu’ils jouent dans le parcours des artistes. Montrer l’évolution de la réflexion sur l’articulation des rapports entre texte et image, mise en oeuvre dans et par le livre illustré, enclenche une réflexion sur la manière dont cette illustration est favorisée par les images ouvertes de la poésie de Rimbaud, particulièrement dans les Illuminations. Rimbaud, qui configure son image poétique un investissant une image plastique tenue en haute estime, ménage par là des potentialités multiples et des principes féconds pour les artistes. Informés des dispositifs textuels des poèmes, leurs illustrations se développent en miroir. Le passage du livre illustré au livre d’artiste accompagne le souci croissant de ces créateurs de s’intéresser à la spécificité de la poésie, et à l’originalité expressive offerte par la mise en tension des caractéristiques du livre au service des effets poétiques.
