Prolégomènes à une approche expérientielle de la traduction

It is widely accepted that in translation, an optimal rendering of the meaning of the source text extensively relies on the mobilisation of the translator’s cognitive baggage, which is generally limited to abstract, cerebral conceptual knowledge, spontaneously assimilated to encyclopaedic knowledge. However, certain types of texts, whatever the field, call upon the sensory-motor or experiential memory of both the translator and the reader. In literary translation, some texts make the reader see, hear or feel, in descriptions, dialogues or action scenes, for example. In pragmatic translation, certain operative texts (such as instructions for use, user manuals or assembly instructions) are also likely to appeal to the reader’s kinaesthetic memory and thus to that of the translator. The present study proposes to explore the theoretical, practical and didactic foundations and issues of an "experiential" approach to translation.
Il est aujourd’hui acquis qu’en traduction, une restitution optimale du sens du texte de départ repose en grande partie sur la mobilisation du bagage cognitif du traducteur. Cela étant, ce bagage est généralement limité aux savoirs conceptuels abstraits, cérébraux, spontanément assimilés aux connaissances encyclopédiques. Or, certains types de textes, quel qu’en soit le domaine, font appel à la mémoire sensori-motrice ou expérientielle – du traducteur comme du lecteur. Ainsi, en traduction littéraire, certains textes donnent à voir, à entendre ou à ressentir : descriptions, dialogues ou scènes d’action, par exemple. En traduction pragmatique, certains textes opératifs – instructions d’utilisation, modes d’emploi, instructions de montage – sont eux aussi susceptibles de faire appel à la mémoire kinesthésique du lecteur et donc, à celle du traducteur. La présente réflexion se propose ainsi d’explorer les fondements et enjeux théoriques, pratiques et didactiques d’une approche dite « expérientielle » de la traduction.
