The Gypsy Wedding Unveiled: Translation and Study of Rafael Romero's Alboreás

This article presents the study and translation of the alboreás recorded by Rafael Romero for the Antología del cante flamenco directed by Perico el del Lunar (Hispavox, [1954] 1958). The translation of this song, the inventory of the variants of the coplas that make it up and their systematic classification have brought to light various thematic motifs that the so-called "three roses" copla (the most widely recorded and broadcast) had not immediately revealed. The commentary of this anthology song — it was the first time that alboreás, usually reserved for gypsy weddings, had appeared on a sound recording — thus provides the necessary contextual elements to understand it, particularly on how the wedding ritual is carried out.
Le présent article propose l’étude et la traduction des alboreás enregistrées par Rafael Romero pour la Antología del cante flamenco dirigée par Perico el del Lunar (Hispavox, [1954] 1958). La traduction du chant, l’inventaire des variantes des coplas qui le composent et leur classement systématique ont permis de mettre au jour différents motifs thématiques que la copla dite des « trois roses » (la plus enregistrée et diffusée) ne laissait pas percevoir de prime abord. Le commentaire de ce chant d’anthologie — c’était la première fois que des alboreás, habituellement réservées aux noces gitanes figuraient sur un enregistrement sonore — apporte ainsi les éléments de contexte nécessaires à sa compréhension, en particulier sur le déroulement du rituel nuptial.
