Dossier Kathleen Raine
Résumé
This dossier is a follow-up to the international colloquium in homage to the English poet Kathleen Raine (1908-2003) which took place on 24 and 25 March 2022 at the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris (see Poésie Première, n° XX; n° 82).
The aim was to place Kathleen Raine's poetic, autobiographical and critical work in the contemporary context almost twenty years after her death and to show to what extent, by drawing on the great texts of the Tradition which so inspired the English Romantics, this work offers a powerful reading grid for the present and future.
We report here on some of the key moments of this conference, the main presentations of which will be published in English.
Firstly, on the subject of Kathleen Raine's relationship with France, the beautiful testimony of Christine Jordis, writer, woman of letters and friend of Kathleen Raine; Annick Johnson's reflection on the translators of Raine's work; and finally, the presence of France in the life of the poetess and in her view of literature through a text by Claire Garnier-Tardieu.
We then consider Kathleen Raine's relationship with Britain in the form of an interview conducted by Andrew Johnston with the author's granddaughter Sonia Madge-Lawes and her great-grandson Sam Lawes, as well as with Vinod Taylor, a close Indian friend. The dossier concludes with the issue of translation with Jessica Stephens and her poetry workshops.
In a somewhat kaleidoscopic form, we will thus be able to discover or rediscover the rich work of a woman who led, throughout her life, a fight against the materialism of the mind reducing the human being, in the words of William Blake, to "a worm of sixty winters", the fight of the Imagination.
Ce dossier fait suite au colloque international en hommage à la poétesse anglaise Kathleen Raine (1908-2003) qui s’est déroulé les 24 et 25 mars 2022, à la Sorbonne Nouvelle à Paris (voir Poésie Première, n° XX ; n° 82).
Il s’agissait de resituer l’œuvre poétique, autobiographique et critique de Kathleen Raine dans le contexte contemporain près de vingt ans après sa disparition et de montrer à quel point, en s’appuyant sur les grands textes de la Tradition qui ont tant inspiré les romantiques anglais, cette œuvre offre une puissante grille de lecture pour les temps présents et à venir.
Nous relatons ici quelques moments phares de ce colloque dont les principales interventions feront par ailleurs l’objet d'un ouvrage en anglais.
Tout d’abord, à propos de la relation de Kathleen Raine avec la France, le beau témoignage de Christine Jordis, écrivaine, femme de lettres et amie de Kathleen Raine ; la réflexion menée par Annick Johnson sur les traducteurs de l’œuvre de Raine; enfin, la présence de la France dans la vie de la poétesse et dans son regard sur la littérature par un texte de Claire Garnier-Tardieu.
Ensuite, nous envisageons la relation de Kathleen Raine avec la Grande-Bretagne sous la forme d’un entretien mené par Andrew Johnston auprès de la petite-fille de l’auteure, Sonia Madge-Lawes et de son arrière-petit-fils, Sam Lawes, ainsi que de Vinod Taylor, un ami indien très proche. Le dossier s’achève par la problématique de la traduction avec Jessica Stephens et ses ateliers de poésie.
Sous une forme quelque peu kaléidoscopique, on pourra ainsi découvrir ou redécouvrir la riche œuvre de celle qui mena, sa vie durant, un combat contre le matérialisme de l’esprit réduisant l’être humain, selon le mot de William Blake, à « un ver de soixante hivers », le combat de l’Imagination.
