The French anthem had established itself as a revolutionary song from the first half of the 19th century. Among the French republican symbols adopted in Spain by the republican political culture, La Marseillaise was (and is) the best known and the most identified with the revolutionary fight and with the freedom of the peoples. The adaptation of the song in Spain from the first stages of liberalism, like the Anthem of Riego, then the appropriation of its music by the republican political culture gave birth to numerous patriotic, regionalist, and revolutionary versions that made the French anthem the identity mark of the Revolution in Spain.
