“Carlos Madrazo Becerra: ¿Un disidente? Principios y realidades de una malograda reforma del Partido Revolucionario Institucional (1964-1965)”

Abstract : From December 1964 to November 1965, as President of the National Executive Committee of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Carlos Madrazo Becerra promoted and implemented a reform which changed the appointment process of the PRI candidates for elected positions, starting with the local bases of the party: its sectional committees. This reform did not prosper and Carlos Madrazo had to give up the leadership of the PRI just a year after his appointment, moving away from official circles until his death in 1969. Many studies dedicated to Carlos Madrazo -generally official- have explained his defeat by the power struggles that erupted in the PRI regardless of the ambivalences of many his speeches where there were taken again certain fundamentals of an official history of the Revolution that had served to legitimize those practices that he - paradoxically – set out to to eradicate. In fact, at the same time as it was questioning the prerogatives of many political groups, the reform restated, without questioning it fundamentally, a centralism embodied in the “myth” of a Revolution inherited from the liberalism of the 19th century. The study of this historiographical tradition helps to understand the historical reasons for the failure of the reform of Carlos Madrazo and casts a new light on a truly revolutionary proposal.
