Qui veut n'être qu'une image? Image trompeuse et enjeux genrés

Résumé

This paper analyses the articulation between gender issues and deceptive image based on the topical case of the « belle noyée », an image that conveys ideologically charged cultural assignations. It examines various processes of deconstruction and reconfiguration of this representation denounced as misleading. Artists reinvest the artistic tradition of the « belle noyée », apprehended as artefact and even as a lie: object of fantasy and of contemplation, offered to the « male gaze », the image tells the story of masculine desire, constructing « the woman » as text and image. Who indeed would want to be reduced to an image, however beautiful? The artists examine the social properties encoded in previous works, objectified through devices of representation, revealing the deceptive character of these images, questioning figurative conventions, the power and status of these representations, the ways in which they offer themselves to be seen. By deconstructing the assignations through ironical quotation, by questioning the medium and what the mechanism of artistic « capture » entails, and, in a paradoxical process of empowerment, by giving voice to the « belle noyée », foremost displayed as a mute body by the tradition, the visual artists and writers urge us to problematize gender by ways of images.
