"Sentences are the smallest bedrooms" : Œdipe, incestuel et inceste dans l'œuvre de Janet Frame

Abstract : We can identify in Janet Frame’s works, which we have read from a psychoanalytical standpoint, the presence of a conflict between oedipal desires and an incestual climate, which could have been an actual incest. It is this conflict that Frame explores deliberately throughout her whole literary output and which also lurks subconsciously in her writings. It is the reason why Frame’s well-known identity quest is so reliant on topography, which helps her locate her elusive sense of self. All her novels contain, under one guise or another, what we call “an incested oedipal child”, whose destiny is nearly always death. This happens in a wider context of male domination over women who collaborate unconsciously to their own enslavement. It is the father who is arraigned as the culprit, through the symbol of the sun. The mother is seen as a blind force of submersion and the daughter as a martyr tree. These symbols are made to evolve, towards an extinction of the father’s might and the resilience of the daughter-tree.A fantasy of a continuous skin is revealed through the imagoes of the father and mother as cow and bull, triggering images of degradation and animality. The weakness of the Ego, trapped between too far and too near, induces sensations of flooding, porosity and confusion between the outside and the inside. Frame also gives her own answer to the debt of life, the possibility to love and what language can say in the context of such a trauma. She produces her own life-giving oxymoron, proximity through distance
