Abstract : This research focuses on the reference to Others in American televised debates, from 1960 to 2016. The corpus includes the first presidential debate of each election. The transcriptions were verified and completed then aligned to the videos thanks to the CLAN software. I support a broad definition of language. It encompasses every semiotic resource provided by the speaker in the construction and interpretation of meaning in interaction. My approach associates the enonciativist theory (Benveniste, 1966), and interactional linguistics (Kerbrat-Orecchioni, 1992, 2017). The context (Duranti, 1982) is taken into account as well as research in sociology (Goffman, 1974), gesture studies (Kendon, 2004), and political discourse analysis (Fairclough, 1989). In this study, pronouns (direct address you or indirect address he/she) and vocatives were counted as well as the orientation of gaze. The quantitative results reveal two types of addresses to the opponent, depending on the candidates’ experience of power– whether they are challengers confronting the ongoing president or non-challengers from the ongoing administration. Part 1 introduces the historical and theoretical contexts which enable us to capture the corpus, and explains the method used for the study. Part 2 presents the quantitative and qualitative analyses of the journalists and candidates’ discourse. The results demonstrate that interpersonal relations between candidates underly their forms of address to Others. Challengers address their opponents directly and gaze at them more often than non-challengers who avoid gaze confrontation and direct addresses.
