Emile Benveniste, de la grammaire comparée à la poétique, en passant pas le Canada et l’Alaska : une pensée par problèmes.

Abstract : If one considers the two volumes of the Problems in General Linguistics, keeping in mind the editorial circumstances of publication of the articles found therein, one immediately notices that the linguistic reflections of Émile Benveniste are not limited to his own field, but open out onto other disciplines and contribute to questions of an anthropological, ethnological, sociological, philosophical, poetic or psychoanalytic nature. This openness has however led people to see Benveniste essentially as a philosopher-linguist and to forget that he was first and foremost an Indo-Europeanist. For this reason, it seems particularly interesting to note the continuity of his life’s work, which makes no separation between Indo-European studies, general linguistics, research on poetic language, and linguistic fieldwork (Afghanistan, Canada, United States).
